Summer is a preferred time to move for a number of reasons. Better weather, longer days, and the kids being out of school are just a few and combined they make a compelling case for planning to move sometime between June and September. Even with the reduced chance of inclement weather and the extra hours of daylight, there are still some drawbacks to keep in mind. In this article, we’ll cover some key considerations for summertime moving day.
High Temperatures
Warmer temperatures can be great, but when the temps really soar, it can be super uncomfortable — and even dangerous — to be working hard under the sun.
Plan to take breaks and look for ways to cool down in air-conditioned interiors or in water. Dress appropriately for the temperatures. Some wardrobe suggestions for staying cool include:
- Light colored clothing
- Loose fitting clothing (though not too loose — you don’t want to get caught on things!)
- Wide-brimmed hats
- Cooling towels or bandanas around the neck
Doing the heavy lifting early or late when the temps are the most comfortable is your best bet, and make sure to take plenty of breaks during the hottest part of the day. Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, including feeling faint, nausea, headaches, and pale skin.
Sun Exposure
Make sure to wear sunscreen! A sunburn won’t just make your first night in your new house uncomfortable, it’s also very dangerous. Make sure to put sunscreen on before you get started and then reapply throughout the day.
Stay Hydrated
It’s vital that you stay hydrated throughout the day. Be sure to have plenty of water available for you and for everyone who is helping. Moving day is full of plenty of activity, so you should be extra vigilant to avoid dehydration.
Plan Ahead
Moving takes a lot of planning, but since summer is such a popular time, you’ll want to be extra sure you’re set to move. That includes scheduling your moving company ASAP to ensure you get the day you need.
Also consider some of the other factors, such as child care, food and water, and everything we’ve mentioned so far. Planning as many details as you can will help ensure your move goes as smoothly as possible.
