Scams to Look Out for When Choosing a Moving Company

The use of moving companies is common, as Americans move more often and need their items packed and sent. The problems come when a customer chooses the wrong moving company and gets caught up in one of the scams that can happen in this industry.

Here are some of the most common things to look out for when considering a moving company.

Getting a Low Quote

As a customer, you’re looking for the best deal for the services you get. It can be tempting to go with a moving company that promises an extremely low price quote for your move. The thought of saving all of that money may make you want to choose that company without wondering how they were able to offer such a low price. The most likely answer is that they won’t show up at all on moving day. Another is that they do such a poor job that the low quote is as much as they can expect to command for the job.

Getting an Incorrect Quote

One of the oldest scams in the moving world is to give a low-to-reasonable quote, and then to charge a completely different amount when it’s time to deliver your belongings. They may not give you much of a reason, or they may say that you had way more items than they thought when you were given the quote. A legitimate company will never do this, as they take down a reasonable inventory of items during their initial walk-through before the quote is ever given. Some companies have been known to actually hold a customer’s belongings hostage until more is paid.

Not Disclosing Actual Services

If you think the quote is reasonable, but there is no detail given about the services they will provide, you could have a serious problem on moving day. They may show up ready to move and tell you that they had no idea they had to pack your items. Or, they may not have the right packing materials and end up damaging large items like furniture. The quote that you get should include which services they provide for that price, and if you are expected to supply anything, you should be told in advance. If you ask them about what is provided and whether you need to provide anything and they tell you they don’t know, consider it a red flag.
