How Do I Move With No Job or Money?

Ideally, people move when they have a position waiting for them in the new city they are moving to. However, for a variety of reasons you just might have to relocate without having a job. Here are some tips to help make your move a bit easier.

Evaluate Your Decision

Sometimes you have to step back and consider your decision to move. In some cases, you may not have a choice — a family member is ill, for instance — but other times you may be in a hurry for no good reason.

If you can put off your move to give yourself time to save up and/or find a new job, you will make the move a lot easier on yourself.

Be Realistic About Finances

Do your homework before you finalize any plans. What’s the cost of living in the new location? How much can you save before your move? How much will you need for living expenses, including food, utilities, first and last month’s rent (if needed), and a cushion in case you don’t find a job right away? Avoid overly-optimistic planning and don’t expect to live off of credit cards or loans.

Start Saving ASAP

Start saving money as soon as you decide you are going to move. Even when you have a budget finalized, you may encounter some extra or unplanned expenses, so saving beyond what you think you need is a very smart move.

Get Thrifty

Moving with no job and on a tight budget means you have to save a much as possible. To do that, acting frugally is a good way to increase your nest egg. Shop around for a reliable and affordable moving company, if you are going that route, or enlist the help of friends who can help you with the process. Save wherever you can: find free boxes, borrow vehicles or equipment when possible, avoid paying for packing materials, etc.

Sell Your Stuff

Selling some of your things can help lighten the load when you move and can give you some extra cash. However, don’t go overboard — keep the essentials so you don’t have to buy things all over again.

Ask for Help

Whether you need to ask for a small loan from family, inquire about staying with friends or loved ones for a bit when you get to your destination, or ask for help for the moving process, don’t try to go it alone! Moving is stressful; moving with no job and little money to a new place is EXTRA stressful. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from anyone and everyone.
